A word of CAUTION: please be aware that following this procedure has the potential of damaging your Mac system files, allow access to intruders and accidentally delete important stuff. If you keep reading you are assuming those risks and will be responsible for the consequences!

If you ever used an Unix terminal, or Mac terminal, you are familiar with the sudo command that gives you access to root privilegies allowing you to do most operations that may present a risk for the system integrity, security and user data related itens.

I understand we live in a world where security in a computer is important so it is obvious that having an almighty root user above the mundane user (aka yourself) in the hierarchy of the computer makes sense.

But in my case, living alone and being the only user of my Mac, constantly having to enter my password for fairly common tasks is pretty boring.

The solution is quite simple, although it won’t work for your current user.

All you need to do is to create a root user that will be your user from now on.

Here’s the steps, in Ventura OS (but available in older MacOS too).

Open System Settings, go to Users & Groups, and click the Edit… button to access Network account server.

Now click Open Directory Utility…

In the Directory Utility window, click the padlock on the bottom left corner. Then on Edit Menu, at the menu bar, select Enable Root User.

Enter a password. This will create an user root whose password is the one you just created.

That’s it.

Log out.

Next time you log in, you will have the option to log as “other users”. Just type root as the user name and the password you created above and you will access your Mac as the root user.

The Mac will still ask for the password in some operations but you will be free to do most actions without having to enter your password.

But be aware that, as a root user, you may REALLY damage your system files or delete important stuff. So use with CAUTION.
